Joshua Lovering Big Decision
Throughout life, no matter who the person is, decisions always have to be made. Whether those decisions will have a lasting impact or not, decisions will be made that all will form the person into who they will become. In schools, decisions become increasingly more important as first choices of behavior and grade-stability come in, and then in vocational schools the choice of which shop you want to fall into comes about. These decisions are crucial to a person's life as they will teach them the structure of their desired field. Now, everyone who is in one shop might not continue down that path, but those lessons learned in the shop side of school will still mold an individual.Vocational schools are fantastic at preparing a student for the workforce, but the decisions that come along with that addition to academics can be challenging. Vocational schools, such as Southeastern Regional High School, offer a broad spectrum of different vocations/shops that one can venture into to prepare them for the after-school life. Southeastern offers a surplus amount of different shops to explore, but, I truly felt at home in the Performing Arts shop of the school. Coincidentally, I came into this school craving the Business and Marketing shop, but through some exploratory, I learned where I truly belong. Southeastern has welcomed the new freshman in with open arms, and Performing Arts has embraced me with its magical teachings. The Performing Arts shop has definitely caught my interest and has gave me a boatload of reasons to appreciate my shop selection. Performing Arts has swooned me with enjoyment and empowerment through the expansive performing world it has opened me up to, such as the theater, filming/editing, and audio/musical world. In my first months of being placed in this shop, the other freshman of my class and I got to explore each side of the shop, Audio, Drama, and Video. During this exploration period I was welcomed into each section of the shop and was surprised to learn that the profession/shop was so extensive. The shop teachers, Mrs. Cooper, Mr. Theriault, and Ms. Brown, all taught the freshman, including me, about each of their sides. In drama, with Mrs. Cooper, I learned how to express myself through acting. In addition to expression, I also got to learn the proper angles and ways to share a stage when performing an act. Lastly, in drama I learned improv which helps with on-your-toes situations when you need to save an act or think of something fast to come back with. In audio, with Mr. Theriault, I learned how to set up a mobile audio system for concerts or such type of events. In addition, I also got to practice on a grand piano, listen to others fine tune their skills, and all around just be covered from head-to-toe in music/audio lessons that were so beneficial to my education. In the third section, video with Ms. Brown, the fellow freshman and I got to learn the proper angles to film at, and how to properly position a subject so that they would attract the attention of the audience. In addition, we also got to learn about a large chunk of the fundamentals of filming, and the different types of styles that go into making a film or picture the most appealing to the audience. These three sections of the shop all tickled me with excitement but one side really did grab my interest, and really did highlight my strength which was the Drama subsection. Not only did the Performing Arts shop allow me to open my views of the performing and technical world, but it also helped me embrace my true passion, Theater/Acting. This was the main reason for me finally choosing to be dedicated to the Drama shop. My passion is acting and that is why I did choose to explore these three very interesting shops. Even though I did come in with a preexisting bias of wanting drama, I still put my best effort forth. Drama is truly up my alley. This shop, and its amazing teacher Mrs. Cooper, invited me and and spoiled me with welcoming and parts in plays I wouldn't have fathomed before. This shop was truly meant for me as it is allowing me to follow my way to my acting goals. My school, Southeastern Regional High School, has a classes that any student can take after school called 9/10 courses. I obviously was interested as I am a devoted hard worker and want as much extra involvement as I can get. Interested as I was, I enrolled myself in the Drama 9/10 course, which opened me up to the acting world like never before. When I first arrive at the after school I was meant to be a technical person, but then, because of my persistent passion and reliability, Mrs. Cooper gave me a roll in the play they were currently working on, "Haze". That was amazing and I have been in love with the acting ever since. Having such a reliable relationship with my teacher has truly benefited me because she has helped me achieve amazing things in my very premature acting life. Embracing my true passion has been amazing and it truly was a main reason for me deciding to choose the Performing Arts/Drama shop. Exposure and Embracing my dreams are two of the main reasons, but, the welcoming feeling and the true feeling of a second home truly was one of the biggest influences for me choosing the Performing Arts. Whenever I do make decisions, the vibe and message the atmosphere gives me truly does aid me in making those choices. When exploring the three sides of Performing Arts, even though I did feel at home or a comfortable feeling in each section, I truly felt the most at home in the Drama section because of both the other students in there and because I honestly could see myself doing this work for a job, and I truly enjoyed myself while doing said work. The cozy feeling of a home-like atmosphere truly allows me to flourish as I am comfortable in my environment and that allows me to be able to truly express myself fully and put forth my best act and or work forth. Even though to some this reasoning may seem strange, I can detest this reason. Imagine that an individual decided to be a part of something they enjoyed the thought of but then felt uncomfortable in the class/environment. Even though that person does have a true passion for the place there in but feel trapped as the environment is not stimulating their creativity. That person would either find another way to learn that topic/skill or be turned off from it because of their environmental history with that specific interest. This reasoning, and counter argument, prove, at least to myself, that in fact that a feeling of comfort and welcoming is beneficial and is a key player in my decision making process. In conclusion, decisions can be complicated, or they could seem so simple that something like fate could be admirable. Whether the decision is big or small, it will affect the decider nonetheless. In school decisions become more and more affecting because they cause more changes and more events to happen that will have a huge impact. One of those decisions is when in a Vocational School, and you have to choose what shop you want to take part in. While, yes you can switch out, it is better to start off on the right foot by choosing the one you truly desire. To me I desired the Drama section of the shop Performing Arts and I had three main reasons that convinced to choose the shop. The reasons were the exposure to the workforce that surrounded the performing arts, the acting and drama section truly inspiring me and allowing my dreams to come true, and the feeling of being at home in my shop. All of these decisions aided me in my decision of my final shop placement and I could not be happier. If anyone ever needs to make a tough or important decision, always make sure that it is thought out thoroughly and truly makes the person happy and enjoy their life/interest.
